日本のフライフィッシングのシーズンは、主に春から秋にかけてだが、魚種や地域、河川の状況によって異なる。一般的に、多くの河川が解禁となる3月頃からシーズンが始まり、ヤマメやアマゴといったサケ科魚類が活動を活発化させる。この時期は雪解け水で水量が増え、水温がまだ低いため、魚は流れの緩やかな場所に定位することが多い。
春から初夏にかけては、カゲロウやトビケラなどの水生昆虫が羽化し始め、水面でライズ（水面の虫を食べるために魚がジャンプすること）が見られるようになる。このライズを狙うドライフライフィッシングが最も面白くなる時期だ。特に新緑が美しい5月から6月にかけては、渓流での釣りがハイシーズンを迎える。
盛夏に入ると、水温の上昇に伴い魚は涼しい深場や流れの速い場所に移動する。この時期はイワナのように冷水を好む魚を狙うのが一般的だ。また、高水温で魚にストレスがかかるため、釣りを控える釣り人もいる。
秋、特に9月から10月にかけては、再び水温が下がり、産卵期を迎える魚が増えるため、活動が活発化する。この時期のヤマメやイワナは婚姻色をまとい、美しい姿を見せる。ただし、魚の保護のため、産卵期に入る魚を狙うことは避けるべきだ。多くの河川では、禁漁期となる9月末から10月頃にシーズンが終了する。

During this time, the water volume increases from snowmelt, and the water temperature is still low, so fish often position themselves in slow-moving sections of the river.
From spring to early summer, aquatic insects like mayflies and caddisflies begin to hatch, and you can start to see fish rising (jumping to eat insects on the surface). This is the most exciting time for dry fly fishing, targeting these rises. The peak season for stream fishing is especially from May to June, when the new greenery is at its most beautiful.
In mid-summer, as the water temperature rises, fish move to cooler, deeper pools or faster-flowing sections. Targeting cold-water-loving fish like iwana is common during this period. Some anglers also refrain from fishing to avoid stressing the fish in high-temperature conditions.
In autumn, particularly from September to October, the water temperature drops again, and as more fish enter their spawning season, their activity becomes more vigorous. Yamame and iwana during this time display beautiful spawning colors. However, it is important to avoid targeting fish that are entering their spawning season for conservation purposes. The season for most rivers ends around late September to October, when the no-fishing period begins.
